A Unique Spin on Content Creation
We’ve got a fun, slightly different topic to cover today! This article is inspired by our very own Russell, who is not only a stellar web designer here at Wolf & Key, but also does light painting photography on the side! Be sure to check out his instagram and his awesome website as soon as you’re done here.
But what’s the point of this post? Well, when it comes to marketing, we like to go at it from unique angles, and light painting is definitely unique!
We’re not assuming anything, but chances are, you’ve never heard of this cool photography style. So let’s talk about what light painting is and how it can give your content that creative twist you’ve been looking for.
What even is light painting?
Light painting is a photographic technique that showcases light patterns made by moving a hand-held light source, usually a colored tube. A long exposure photograph is taken of these movements, which illuminates their path much like a brush-stroke on a canvas (hence the name light painting).
Light painting has been around since 1889, but it’s still a pretty rare art form. That means this unique and under-utilized photographic technique is completely up for grabs.
Russ has turned light painting into an entire business and has gotten some pretty cool recognition from a few big names in the industry. I mean, how could you not when you get incredible shots like this?!
How You Can Use Light Painting to Boost Your Business
There’s a lot of content on the internet and more is constantly pouring in. We like to think way outside the box when it comes to creating interesting content, and light painting is a great way to do that. It could give your product or business that boost it needs. For example, Adam and Taylor are both members of a sweet motorcycle club called Boulder Street Moto, and recently Russ took some pretty epic shots of Adam in their space!
I mean, that’s content gold right there. So unique. So cool. Who wouldn’t want to join that garage and be friends with Adam now?
Has the Pack Ever Used Light Painting for a Project?
Heck yeah! When we first used it, we decided to start small, throwing a few of his photos into our social media schedule. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Not only did the light-painted photos receive a massive amount of likes and shares, but they also just got people talking.
We had a lot of people asking us how it was done, wanting to learn more about where it comes from, and asking how they could use it.
The moral of the story: don’t be afraid to refresh your creative content by trying something new!
So How Do You Do It?
Well it’s not photoshop! It takes a lot of practice and a steady hand. Most likely, unless you’re a photographer, you’ll need to hire someone to take some shots for you. But believe us, it’s totally worth it! If you’d like a more in-depth explanation about exactly how to go about light painting, check this out.
In the mean time, let us know what you think of light painting! Drop us a comment and enjoy these sweet shots while you’re at it:
